I’ve worked on over two hundred magazine covers. From A-List celebrities to world leaders, dogs to wild animals. They are all unique and exciting experiences. The following are just a few. I change them from time to time.
On the way to this photo shoot, a colleague said, “get a photo with him, he might be our next President.” I did not.

John & Yoko inspired. Ask me in person about some of the other subjects that were considered.

One of my favorite style covers from my days at Esquire. Timeless. (Miles Teller however wasn’t a fan of the story.)
Role: Photo Director
Photographer: Vincent Peters
This cover featured horizontal perforated strips, allowing the reader to mix and match portions of Clooney, Justin Timberlake, and President Obama. It was a by-product of an ideation session at a bar between David Curcurito, Martin Schoeller, and I. It proves that good ideas sometime happen over a cocktail.

Five women. Three separate days. Math and an incredibly patient, accomplished, and talented photographer behind the lens.
Role: Creative Director
Photographer: Ramona Rosales
Design and Creative Director of Esquire, David Curcurito, brought forth a multitude of innovations when it comes to cover design. One of my favorites was his use of handwritten type. Here is an early example, (and possibly my favorite), with the GOAT.

Photographer: Matthias Vriens
Photographed in Ottawa at the National Gallery of Canada. A welcoming, gracious, and charming man. We were originally supposed to do the shoot in a park, but it was raining. After experiencing the level of security, I’m glad the weather didn’t cooperate.
Role: Creative Director
Photographer: Caitlin Cronenberg
Part of a three issue arc featuring famous men. (Brad Pitt and Matt Damon were on the other two) . Rare and brave to have three issues run concurrently showing black & white photography. David Granger, the Editor and Chief of Esquire, was behind that. Everything on this site that is Esquire related is because of Granger.
Role: Photo Director
Photographer: Max Vadukul
The former President was gracious enough to do a “short” intro video for this cover. Not sure the QR code still works however.
Role: Photo Director
Photographer: Peter Yang
Role: Photo Director
Photographer: Nico
This was an enormous undertaking. Successful because of the tenacity of Editor Richard Dorment and Photographer Mark Mann. Each portrait had companion video. It was done over the course of a year and with a rather restricted budget.

I got stuck in a hallway with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp on this shoot. From time to time I still have nightmares about it.
Role: Photo Director
Photographer: Marc Hom
Lots of “good boy” [finger snap, finger snap], “good girl” [click, click].
Role: Creative Director
Photographers: Jenn Ackerman & Tim Gruber
